WFN needs your help because demand for our funds greatly outstrips our current resources.

Many of our supporters choose to donate through us because we offer an efficient and proven method of transmitting charitable donations to where it is needed most in conservation. Over the past decade we have developed effective processes for identifying the world’s most effective conservation leaders, supporting them directly, taking as little as possible for our own administration, and channelling as much as possible to their work on the ground.

Our patron HRH The Princess Royal has kindly described WFN as:
‘One of the most cost effective and direct impact charities working to protect the environment’.

We have earned this reputation by:

  • imposing rigorous methods of application screening utilising a top academic panel, in combination with international reference checks and face-to-face interviews, to identify the world’s most dynamic conservation leaders.
  • attracting applications from individuals in remote locations where international funds are hardest to raise, most needed, and will make the largest conservation impact.
  • ensuring as much donation money as possible goes direct to projects by keeping our overheads as low as possible.
  • meeting and getting to know our Whitley Award finalists before selecting the winners, ensuring we know and trust the individuals we give funds to.
  • supporting nature conservationists who are nationals of the countries where they work, who are often well placed to bring about change and build capacity at a local level.
  • offering an Awards scheme that is conducive to precipitating genuine long-term conservation benefits, not one-off grant giving. We maximise the likelihood that projects can become self-supporting and find new sources of funding by raising the profile of winners and providing ongoing advice and support.
  • maintaining close contact with winners, keeping abreast of conservation developments and where funds are most needed, and stepping in where necessary to offer Continuation Funding to previous winners who have proven themselves to be truly exceptional.

How you can help

Donations of any size are warmly welcomed.

For smaller donations of less than £5,000 we have developed The Friends Award, funded entirely by donations from individual supporters. The Award, which was first given in 2003, provides donors with the ability to experience a direct link with one of our winners, as well as the opportunity to meet other WFN supporters through our informal supporters’ network, the Friends of The Whitley Fund for Nature.  The Friends of WFN is chaired by WFN Trustee Catherine Faulks.  All donations received in relation to Friends events throughout the year are combined with other small donations and put towards the annual Friends Award.  There are two tiers of 'Friend':

Donations of £100 and over will receive an invitation to the Whitley

Awards Ceremony, a regular newsletter to remain updated with all

the latest progress of our winners and their projects, and invitations

to Young WFN Events, when held.

Donations of £500 and over will receive all of the above, and will also be

invited to a private dinner party to meet the winners before the

Whitley Awards Ceremony, giving Friends the opportunity to discuss

conservation in person with the people supported by WFN.

For larger donations exceeding £5,000 we offer the ability for donors to exercise more involvement in deciding the kind of nature conservation initiative they would like to support. We discuss this on a case by case basis with each donor. “Named” Awards of £30,000 or more are also possible for our largest donors.
